Just Transition to a Renewable Society
Update March 2024
The Sustainable Jobs Act, the imperfect but still useful outcome of our just transition petition campaign, is waiting for its Third Reading and some new amendments, particularly that the date of 2040 for the Sustainable Jobs Action plan (a Conservative amendment) be changed back to the original 2025!
The Sustainable Jobs Act is ready to finish winding its way through Parliament. The Conservatives are still trying to stall the legislation. Would you please email Yukon's MP Brendan Hanley (brendan.hanley@parl.gc.ca) to ask that he advocate strongly to get the Act to its Third Reading and that the action plan date be changed back to 2025. Email the Prime Minister at justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca with the same request.
Council of Canadians offers this series of articles: Unpacking Climate Solutions: False, Unjust, or Real? Read Part 1 on False Solutions, Part 2 on Unjust Solutions, and Part 3 on Real Solutions
Next steps:
Council of Canadians recognizes that we are in a new political moment for the climate movement, in which we need to connect all this: the climate crisis, the cost of living and inequality crisis, implementing a just transition, corporate greed, and taxing the very rich to pay for the public services and green infrastructure that we need. Building grass roots power must be central.

Letter Writing Campaign
Please send a pre-made letter at this link or use this information to write your own.
The draft Sustainable Jobs Act in front of Parliament is the most important federal climate legislation yet. It has both good points and holes big enough to build a pipeline through.
For Canada's speedy and just transition to a carbonless society, it has to be strengthened!
