CAMPAIGN TO LIMIT MINING'S

GHG EMISSIONS

One goal is that the Yukon Government (YG) keeps its commitment to establish targets for GHG emissions from Yukon mining – then strengthen those targets.  YG promised there would be a target limit by the end of 2022 but so far there isn’t one. Currently, YG has indicated it is working on revising the Clean Energy Act to include a mining intensity target of a 45% reduction in emissions by 2035.

Mining’s carbon emissions, according to 2017 data, are about 10% of Yukon’s total (estimated from their purchase of fossil fuels) although they are currently not included when Yukon’s carbon emissions are reported. Two potential mines, Newmont's Coffee Creek, now for sale, and Casino, would be off-grid.  It appears plans for both are to use fossil gas (LNG) and/or diesel for their enormous operations, which would greatly increase that 10%.

Another goal for our campaign is that YG stop subsidizing placer mining - which has been getting a complete rebate on the carbon pricing "tax".  Other Yukon industries get a partial rebate.

GHG emissions from mines disturbing large areas of the Boreal, especially wetlands, are not considered at all.
